Arizona Victims’ Rights Laws

What defines a “victim”?

According to Arizona law, in a court case, a “victim” is a party to a crime recognized by the courts. However, keep in mind that in Arizona, certain criteria must be met for a court to grant someone recognition as a victim of a crime. If you work with a Victim’s Rights attorney here at Tait & Hall, we’ll work with you throughout the process to fight for the proper recognition you deserve.

Arizona’s Court-Appointed Victim’s Advocates Often Miss the Mark

Once an individual has achieved recognition from the court as a victim, they will be eligible to be appointed a Victim’s Advocate through the county prosecutor’s office (in most jurisdictions.) Victim’s Advocates are supposed to guide victims throughout the entire court proceedings, yet, despite their usual benevolent intent, they often serve as little more than information kiosks. Typically, Victim’s Advocates are not lawyers and may not be the most adept at defending and securing a victim’s rights.

What should I do if I’m the victim of a crime in Arizona?

In most court cases, the offender(s) of a crime get A LOT of attention from the judge, prosecutors, and the media (if they’re involved). Simultaneously, the victims of the same crime are largely forgotten. Our justice system– the one meant to protect us– often leaves victims behind while focusing solely on the perpetrators.

By hiring a Victims’ Rights attorney to represent you in court, you will be much more likely to succeed in reaching the best possible outcome for you. An experienced attorney will help you understand your rights as a victim, will advocate for you throughout the entire court process, and work to obtain meaningful results for you.
